Savannah Georgia, established in 1773, is known the world over for its elegant antebellum architecture, historic buildings, park-like squares, Live Oak trees draped in Spanish Moss, beautiful sandy beaches, and southern hospitality. All this and more make Savannah a desired tourist destination for vacationers from both the US and abroad. Savannah is one of only a few cities that can offer the vacationer the culture and history of a pre-Civil War city combined with the amenities and attractions of a resort destination.
Tybee Island, also known as Savannah Beach, is located 18 miles east of downtown Savannah. It bosts a 3-mile long white sand beach with sea oat-covered sand dunes that is a favorite spot for both locals and tourists to sunbathe, swim and enjoy the gentle ocean waves. The pier and pavillion at the south end of the beach offers a perfect spot for just strolling or fishing. While Tybee Island has an official population of approximately 3,500 residents, it is still a full service resort offering restaurants, lounges, hotels, and rental condos. Tybee prides itself on having a more laid-back and less commercialized atmosphere than other resorts located along the east coast. Tybee Island also has something else to offer that most resort towns can't - history. Fort Screven, Fort Pulaski National Monument, and the Tybee Island Lighthouse and Museum are all located on, or just off, Tybee Island.
